139 Jonson is three blocks of land currently housing four dwellings over 2,835m² (0.7 acres) at the most southern tip of Jonson Street. Incorporating 137 Jonson Street and 3 Browning Street. Across the road is The Byron Butter Factory Apartments and the Byron Music complex.
In September 2017 we lodged a development application with Byron Shire Council for a mixed use development. In October 2018 the Joint Regional Planning Panel (JRPP) assessed and refused the application. Community feedback at the time was primarily focused on a fourth storey.
In August 2019 we undertook intensive community consultation prior to finalising a renewed plan for the site. On 26 November 2019 an amended application was lodged with Byron Shire Council. Changes included removal of the fourth storey, removal of the child care centre (at the request of immediate neighbours) and removal of all short term accommodation to provide Byron Bay township’s first permanent residential housing development.
On 21 May 2020 Byron Shire Council assessed and approved our development application.
We thank all those who helped guide this project to the stage where we are able to now invest in construction. All those who gave their time to provide feedback. A project such as this has a significant degree of community ownership. That does end now that we have secured approval. We will continue to update this website as we move forward. Please contact us at any time with feedback or questions. Your input is helpful as we commence our next stage of construction.
